  • Inonotus obliquus or Chaga (a Latinisation of the Russian word чага), is a fungus that is parasitic mainly on birch trees and is famous for its sterile conk that is irregularly formed bearing the appearance of burnt charcoal. It is not actually a mushroom but instead a sclerotium or mass of mycelium that is building up to become a mushroom.[2] The Ainu people of Eastern Asia have been using Chaga for at least 600 years for its antioxidant properties and stimulation of the immune system.[1] An interesting feature of Chaga is the flavor, it is like a mix of vanilla, dark chocolate, and wood. A strange yet extremely pleasant one.
